The DeSoto County Community Health Council was formed in 2006 and is a collaborative effort to address health and quality of life issues and barriers in the community (county).  Volunteers from across the county representing various organizations and health related fields come together bi-monthly to address these issues.  The Council Supports programs that are currently in place and assists in identifying gaps in service to try to fill these gaps with new programs/services.  They follow the mission of GET A LIFE! and work through schools, worksites and faith-based organizations.

An initial Action Plan created D.A.C. (Developing Athletic Kids) which saw 50 students lose a total 300+ inches in this 6 month program.  The Council has also provided support letters to each of the DeSoto County schools in an effort to assist them with their School health Councils and meeting the nutrition and physical education requirements of the State Department of Education.  Each month the Council provides:

  • A Monthly Health Campaign which is distributed in various means and serves as a wonderful and simple way for individuals, groups, businesses and families to work together on a nutrition or physical fitness activity;
  • A Monthly Health Champion Recognition to a business, school, organization or individual who is an advocate for healthy lifestyles.  Anyone can make a nomination by emailing the nominee's name and information on how they promote healthy lifestyles to plinton@cfnm.org
