FAITH BASED HEALTH MINISTRIES

A Church Health Summit convened by Get A Life in 2006 and subsequent training opportunities have spurred the growth of health ministries in various congregations in Desoto, Marshall and Tate Counties.   Now, groups in several additional counties are being formed to meet quarterly for training and networking.

Healthy Congregations, a regional faith-based coalition with advisory board members from six denominations representing more than 600 congregations and encompassing most of north Mississippi, has been formed to mobilize and empower people who want to help make our state a healthier place to live.

Healthy Congregations, has three main priorities:

·         Support the establishment and growth of health ministries in individual congregations through training, technical support and resources

·         Connect a growing network of faith-based groups promoting better health

·         Convene a regional Health Summit in October 2009 to provide training, showcase best practices and promote advocacy for addressing the social determinants of health and disparities that contribute to lower life expectancy, higher rates of chronic disease and other disproportionate obstacles to good health in Mississippi.

Healthy Congregations has adopted the Healthy People 2010 Leading Health Indicators as a framework for ending childhood obesity and the chronic diseases obesity causes along with other leading causes of poor health and death in Mississippi.  Membership in Healthy Congregations is open to all faith groups who wish to join the coalition.

A toolkit to make establishing a Health Ministry in local congregations easier includes Ten Steps for Getting Started, a simple but effective planning guide, survey forms and an annual health guide highlighting a different health issue each month.  A wealth of information and resources are also available to congregations through the toolkit.
