NURSE/LAY HEALTH ADVOCATE TRAINING CLASS BEGINS IN JUNE!
Healthy Congregations is offering a limited number

scholarships for this training to assist registered nurses and lay health
advocates who live or worship in Desoto, Tate, Tunica, Marshall, Panola,
Quitman, Tallahatchie or Coahoma counties.

Champions graduated from our first Faith Community Nurse/Lay Health
Advocate
class on February 6, 2010

7 Registered Nurses
and 19 lay health ministry leaders from 20 congregations have completed 32 hours
utilizing the International Parish Nurse Resource Center approved
curriculum. Our partnership with the
Healthy Ministry Network of the Mid-South and Northwest Community College made
the training possible and has produced a network of trained faith based leaders
to carry forward the work of establishing robust health ministries within their
own congregations. The graduation
ceremony will be held at the Haraway Center at NWCC at 3pm with Dr. Michael O.
Minor presiding.

SEED FUNDS HELP
CHURCHES PROMOTE HEALTHY LIFESTYLESThe Healthy Congregations Board, an initiative of the
Community Foundation of NW MS, has announced the award of $4,000 in seed funds
to ten projects engaging 23 faith based organizations in seven counties to
implement strategies that will increase consumption of fresh, local vegetables,
promote physical activity and focus attention on chronic disease prevention
through healthier personal choices and advocacy for creating healthier
communities. Projects funded include
church gardens, walking clubs, fitness classes, addition of health curriculum
in Vacation Bible School, healthier foods at church gatherings and on-going
health education through special events.
The seed funds will go to these participants in the first
annual health conference held last October at Desoto Civic Center where nearly
400 residents from 17 counties gathered to hear keynote speaker, Dr. Kenneth S.
Robinson, make a powerful case for including health as a part of the mission
within the faith community.
