TALLAHATCHIE – JUNK FOOD BUSTERS

Nearly 800 children in Tallahatchie County participated in “Junk Food Free Wednesdays” throughout the 2007-08 school year.  The project included instruction about healthy food choices, healthy snacks, free BMI screening and fun physical activities at the Eva Covington Head Start center and local elementary schools.   Kids enjoyed Carrot Day and other special events that raised awareness for the project.  Owners of the Subway in Charleston, Johnny & Debra Goodwin, partnered with the Community Health Council through a month long campaign to provide free snacks at Subway for local kids.

In a county-wide effort to increase opportunities for physical activities for Tallahatchie young people, the Community Health Council provided Dance Dance Revolution equipment to two elementary schools in east and west Tallahatchie as well as to the Charleston Boys & Girls Club and the Tutwiler Community Education Center.   Tallahatchie Head Start centers were provided with equipment to promote more physical activity including a large supply of ball, hoops, cones, and bean bags for Glendora Head Start and Wii equipment with games for pre-K age children at Eva Covington Head Start.

Members of the CHC are volunteering to serve on School Wellness Councils at city and county schools in the 2008-09 School Year and to support the work of Alliance for Healthier Generations Relationship Manager, Valeria Hawkins who will provide extensive services and support to Tallahatchie schools in the coming year to help them fulfill new state mandates for nutrition and physical activity.
